The Importance of the Exclamation Point in Social Media
In Honor Of National Punctuation Day:
There are many who would argue that social media interaction has a language all of its own, exemplified by the way it turns verbs into adjectives (Fail, Win) and creates some sort of new hot abbreviation everyday.
Brands and businesses who use social media aim to be open, transparent, and helpful. They need to be enthusiastic about their products and services, and genuine in their appreciation for their customers. You know what really comes in handy when trying to come off as positive, upbeat, and friendly? An exclamation point!

In social media interaction the exclamation point is the equivalent of a smile, and it can do wonders for relationship building. When you meet someone in real life you can convey your emotions through your facial expressions, body language, or vocal intonations. With social media, all you have is punctuation to express your true feelings.
So the exclamation point may be over used in social media but for good reason– it the greatest tool we have to convey positivity in text. Who really wants to engage with a downer anyway? Not me! I have real life for that.
