If Content Is King, Am I Good Enough To Sit In The Throne?

When we get new clients who aim to improve their business through interactive design, search engine optimization, and interactive marketing– one of the first things we recommend is that they build a blog.

A blog that acts as the interactive hub of your brand is extremely important. As a company, a blog allows you to connect directly with  potential clients, brand yourself effectively, and, on the technical side, increases you search engine rankings and visibility. A blog is usually the centerpiece of any interactive marketing strategy, where all of your engaging content emanates from.

While this is exciting, it is also a huge responsibility. Many of our clients are fearful of this new responsibility. Here are some samplings of trepidation that we hear from clients on a daily basis, and how we respond:

1) “I’m just not sure what to write about”

Ah, the most common excuse for not blogging. Well, you can start by blogging about the interesting aspects of your business. It does not matter if you run a multi-billion dollar company or run a small store, there is some aspect of your daily business routine that is of interest to some portion of the outside world.

2) “What if people respond negatively”

First, you want people to respond to your content, and to create content that will get people talking. If people respond negatively, it gives you as the business owner a chance to remedy the situation, show your passion for your customers, or to explain your point further. Don’t fear responses, embrace them, as long as they are intelligent.

3) “I just don’t have time”

In our day an age time is of the essence, and it is also money. Yes, building a blog may be time consuming and labor intensive at first, but how much time do you spend marketing your business on a weekly basis? Do you get the results you want? Eventually, being interactive on the web will bring in qualified targeted leads and allow you to market with, rather than merely to potential customers. Still too busy?

4) “Am I qualified?”

Yes. No one knows your business or industry better than you. Write about what you know, be open, and be smart. You are all of those things. If you weren’t you wouldn’t be in the position that you’re in.

So, if you’re a business owner, go get blogging. Yes, content is king, and you are absolutely good enough to sit in the throne.

Sidenote: This is not a green light for every business person to start a blog. It is a little encouragement to come up with an interactive marketing strategy where your blog acts as a content hub.

Aside from the obvious gang affiliations, this is a fairly great argument. I’m forwarding it to my bosses.
