Blog Action Day! Global (Social) Warming
Today is Blog Action Day , the largest “social change” event on the web. The focus of blog action day 2009 is on climate change, one of the most pressing issues in our world today. We all are pretty generally aware of how dire the situation is.
On the positive side? We now have more tools than ever to connect and organize people around a cause. So without further ado, here are ways to use social media to organize people around a cause, global warming or otherwise.

Twitter:
So loads of people are tweeting about brands (close to 40% from some measurements) — Instead of just creating a following, network with brands and individuals that dominate the social media conversation. The great thing about social good? Brands want to embrace it to enhance their own image. Play off that.
Do the behind the scenes work before you start spewing your message out there. Do your research, find your influencers, and make sure you are all on the same page.
User generated content. There are millions of passionate people out there, and they all want to be heard. Let them. Encourage them to create content whether it’s video, pictures, or text that communicates their dedication to the cause.
Corporate fundraising. Get supported by some of the wealthiest people on the internet, it’s pretty neat that a lot of them hang out in one place. 38% percent of people on LinkedIn make over $100,000 a year. Donations anyone?
Turn Online Networking In To Offline Networking:
While social media is extremely powerful– there is nothing like good old fashioned man (or women) power to get a cause exposure. Once you have those millions of followers or thousands of engagements with social media users, organize something huge. Use all your connections to do something that would not have been possible before our current level of connectivity.
What are some other creative ways non-profits can utilize social media to bring both money and awareness to an important cause like global warming?

Just stumbled upon your blog through LAF’s blog. Good suggestions for non-profits. You already mentioned videos through Facebook, but you can also create funny and engaging videos and post them on YouTube. Just another way to raise some good awareness. Since Twitter allows users to search by topic, it makes it much easier for non-profits to pin point the leaders on that issue and also find out what people are saying. Listening and relationship building is the key. Thanks!
